Inspired from “Sai Baba’s Chatters & Sayings” by B V Narasimha Swamiji
Imagine yourself as a time traveller, stepping into the serene village of Shirdi over a century ago. You find yourself transported to a humble, the sacred Dwarakamai, where the divine presence of Sai Baba pervades every corner. As you watch, unnoticed and invisible, you witness a profound interaction between Baba and his close devotee, Nana. This isn’t just a story, it’s a living moment unfolding before your eyes. Let the sounds, sights, and wisdom envelop you as you become a silent witness to this timeless episode. This article unfolds as you are the invisible witness watching the divine play scene by scene.
The sun has dipped below the horizon, and the soft glow of lanterns lights up the rustic walls of Dwarakmai. A gentle breeze carries the scent of burning incense and freshly cooked food from nearby homes. Sai Baba, clad in his simple white kafni, sits on the stone with his back resting against the wall. His serene face radiates compassion, wisdom, and an enigmatic smile that seems to hold the secrets of the universe. Devotees come and go, seeking blessings, but the air is quiet as the evening winds down.
You, the invisible traveller, stand near the entrance, absorbing the sanctity of the space. Suddenly, Nana enters, his hands folded in reverence.
Baba: (with a playful glint in his eye) Nana, I would like Pooran Poli. Prepare it for Naivedya and bring it.
Nana: (hesitant, glancing at the hour) Baba, it is late, and there is no cook available now.
Baba: (calmly) Never mind, Nana.
With a sigh of devotion, Nana nods and leaves. Time shifts, and soon you see him returning, carrying eight Pooran Polis and side dishes on a plate. He places them reverently before Baba.
Nana kneels before Baba, his eyes filled with hope.
Nana: Baba, I have brought the food. Please taste it.
Baba waits in silence. Moments pass, and you notice ants and flies settling on the Pooran Poli. Nana looks perplexed.
Baba: (smiling gently) Good. Take away the plates now.
Nana: (confused and insistent) Baba, how can I take the plates away when you haven’t touched the food? Why did you ask me to prepare this if you weren’t going to eat? Unless you partake, I cannot remove the plates, nor can I eat my food.
Baba leans back, His eyes twinkling with infinite patience.
Baba: Nana, I have eaten the poli. Take the plates away and have your meal.
Nana: (stubbornly) Baba, when did you eat it? The plates look untouched. Unless I see you eat, I cannot believe it.
Frustrated and still hungry, Nana leaves Dwarakamai and lies down at the Chavadi. You follow him for a moment but are drawn back as Baba’s eyes glimmer with a mix of amusement and compassion.
Unable to see Nana’s suffering, Baba calls for him again. Nana reluctantly returns, his expression a blend of devotion and defiance.
Baba: (softly) Nana, at some time, I took your poli. Why are you being so obstinate? Take the plates away and eat.
Nana, still unconvinced, leaves again. Baba shakes His head, a divine smile playing on His lips. He sends for Nana once more.
Baba: (this time with a hint of sternness) Nana, you have been with me for 18 years. Is this all that you have learned? Is this your understanding of me? Do you think your Baba is merely this visible body of 3 ½ cubits height? Is that all I am to you?
You, standing nearby, feel the weight of Baba’s words reverberate through the air. Baba continues, His voice carrying a profound truth.
Baba: I eat in the form of the ant. I eat in the fly that eats. I take what form I choose and partake in the food. I have already taken your poli long ago. Do not cling to this stubbornness, Nana.
Nana looks at Baba, his mind wrestling with the enormity of these words.
Nana: Baba, though you say so, I cannot understand. What am I to do? If you make me understand, I will take the plates away and eat.
Baba leans forward, His gaze penetrating Nana’s very soul. You watch in awe as Baba makes a subtle gesture, one that reveals secrets buried deep in Nana’s heart, secrets no one else could possibly know.
Nana’s face softens, his eyes welling up with realization. In that moment, he understands that Baba is not merely a physical being but the omnipresent, omniscient Sarvantaryami, the inner witness of all. You looking at Nana’s face as it transforms from confusion to humility. Tears well up in his eyes as he falls to his knees, bowing deeply before Baba.
Nana: (bowing deeply and voice trembling with reverence) Baba, I understand now. Forgive my ignorance. I will take away the plates and eat my food.
Baba’s face radiates compassion as he blesses Nana with a smile.
Baba: (smiling) (kindly) Nana, as you see this sign I made, you will also see the truth of what I say. Always remember, God is present in every form. Serve all beings with the same devotion you show me. This is the essence of all spirituality.
Nana nods, his heart brimming with gratitude and newfound wisdom. He takes the plates away and partakes of his meal, his soul nourished as much as his body. As the plates are removed, the night grows quieter. The lanterns flicker, casting long shadows on the walls of Dwarakmai. You feel a profound sense of peace wash over you. Baba’s words echo in your mind, their wisdom unravelling layers of understanding about the nature of divinity and the interconnectedness of all life.
Now you step back, your invisible journey through time coming to an end. Yet, the lesson lingers, etched into your heart forever. A profound sense of peace envelops you, as if the very air of Dwarakmai is infused with divinity.
Baba’s words echo in your mind, unravelling profound layers of understanding, about the nature of divinity, the interconnectedness of all beings, and the limitless ways love and devotion manifest in the universe. You feel your heart swelling with gratitude and awe as you take in the sacred space one last time.
You begin to step away, realizing that your invisible journey through time is drawing to an end. As you near the threshold of Dwarakmai, a gentle yet firm touch on your shoulder startles you. Turning around, your breath catches, and tears well up in your eyes. It is Baba himself, standing right next to you, his face glowing with compassion and wisdom. His gaze is soft yet penetrating, as if looking directly into your soul.
“Child,” Baba says, his voice a soothing balm to your spirit, “When you offer with love, I accept. I am in every being, in every corner of creation. See me in all, and you shall know the truth.”
His words pierce through the layers of your being, leaving you humbled and overwhelmed with divine love. Gently, Baba places his warm, weathered palm on your head, a touch so filled with grace and blessings that you feel an indescribable wave of serenity wash over you. Then, with infinite tenderness, Baba dips his fingers into the sacred Udi and applies it to your forehead, sealing the moment with his divine mark.
“Now you go, my child,” Baba says with a reassuring smile, his voice carrying a promise of eternal connection. “We will meet soon again.”
You nod, unable to speak, your heart too full for words. Slowly, you take a step back, your eyes fixed on Baba. Behind him, the Dhuni burns brightly, its flames reaching upwards as if carrying your gratitude and devotion to the heavens. The sacred fire, a symbol of Baba’s eternal wisdom and compassion, continues to burn steadily, lighting up the timeless space of Dwarakmai.
As you finally turn away, you find yourself stepping back into the time capsule that brought you here. The sacred scene of Dwarakmai fades into the vast expanse of a starry night sky over Shirdi. You return to your present time, carrying with you the blessings of Baba’s touch, the wisdom of his words, and the everlasting memory of his compassionate smile, etched into your soul forever and the craving to meet him again soon.
